Fighting a cold
What do you guys do when you are fighting a cold or the flu?
My kids have been sick for about three weeks now trading the cold and flu back and forth. I don't believe in giving them any cold and flu medication so I have been getting them to have some Lemon Ginger Tea instead. They have been having lots of water, orange juice, chicken or turkey soup. I have also been making sure they get ridiculous amounts of Vapor Rub on their chest, back and neck and of course some of this tea. They don't really like it all that much but a little bit here and there through out the day makes a difference.

Ingredients for one mugful:
1 Lemon (good for antibacterial qualities, vitamin C and can relieve fever)
1 tbsp chopped fresh ginger (warms the stomach, lungs and relieves congestion)
4 sticks of whole cinnamon (has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties and relieves aching muscles)
4 tbsp honey (an antiseptic and antioxidant coats and soothes irritated throats)
Directions:
1. Break cinnamon sticks in half and boil in two cups of water. Add chopped ginger. Boil for at least 10 minutes until the water is nice and golden brown.
2. Pour the honey and the lemon juice in the cup.
3. Add boiling cinnamon & ginger water to the lemon and honey and stir.
4. Allow to cool if you are serving it to little ones. (I like to drink it nice and hot because it gets my chest nice and warm and helps with my sinuses).

Alternatively you could also add a pinch of cayenne pepper (relief to sore throats) and some turmeric (antiseptic and antibacterial agent) to this tea but a warning from me is that it's not well liked by most. LOL.
I am also one of those moms that strongly believes that a lot of care and nurturing is what makes the most difference when the kids are sick. This means that the kids don't go anywhere AT ALL. They stay at home until they are well. I don't like sharing germs and I don't like exposing them to the cold and weather that usually does make them sicker. I don't care what anyone else tells me. Usually if they are sick and go out in the windy cold air they are more than likely to get worst. My kiddos also get a lot of cuddles and love but I'm sure I don't need to tell any of you that as it's heartbreaking to see your kiddos that sick and all you want to do is hug then and make them feel better.
For fevers I am absolutely open to Tylenol or Advil which I find that Advil works a lot better. I know Advil is hard on the liver and kidneys so I make sure that they really need it before I give it to them as a little bit of a fever is not too bad because it just means that the body is fighting to get rid of whatever bugs are making you sick. Usually my little ones go to bed in their undies and I monitor them throughout the entire night. Yes, sick kids give me anxiety and I do not sleep at all until they are well. Any cough or sneeze usually had me running to their room to see if they are okay.
Don't even ask me what it was like when they were infants. I was more paranoid then.
Good luck to you all with your sick little ones this winter.
